So you are going to purchase a stand by generator for your business! Even before you choose the unit, you must think of the matters related to its installation. So far as the installation of the stand by generators is concerned, the role of the dealer is important. It is the responsibility of the dealer to evaluate the factors relating to the safe installation of the system. It is recommended that you try to find the dealer near your locality.
In that case the dealers may offer to install the unit in addition of delivery and maintenance services. In case, the dealers are not located conveniently, they are expected to put you in touch with qualified electricians and plumbers to help install your system. Standby generators become the permanent fixture of your commercial premises; they are wired into the business's electric system.
So it is important to install the generator in proper manner by following all the necessary guidelines. An improper installation will prevent the generator from working efficiently; it will be overheated easily. The net result is the damage of your office equipments as well the existing wiring. If you are operating from rented premises, you have to first take permission from your land lord for installing the generator. The installation work begins with the right placement of the generator. The proximity should be maintained with the existing electric service panel and gas line.
The generator has to be installed outside the building but near to it. If you can place it near the electric panel, then the task of installation becomes easier. Now you have to erect a concrete pad over which the generator will sit. Sometimes rubber pads are also used.
However, the expenses of constructing a concrete pad are usually covered by the dealer itself. The next part of installation involves connection of the generator to the gas or propane line, if you are using them as fuel. Since standby generators are sensitive to fuel pressure and volume, make sure of the quality of the connection. Now comes the most important part of the installation and that is electrical connection.
The major aspect of electrical connection involves the attachment of a safety device called an automatic transfer switch. As the power runs out, the generator starts up automatically; it takes little while to get stable and then only the transfer switch connects the generator to your business's electrical system. As the power comes back, the switch disconnects the generator from the electrical system and the system comes back to its normal state. This system prevents your generator from feeding electricity back to the power grid of the utility provider or the neighbors.
Always summon a qualified electrician to install the power transfer switch that requires permission from proper authorities. Investing on a dedicated sub-panel will prove profitable in the long run, as it will enable you to connect only essential equipments to the generator and that way your generator would be saved from over working.
